E. OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
- Selection of Material Handling Systems
Increasing international competition, growing labor costs and the flexibility that is demanded by clients, make it necessary nowadays to support each (manufacturing or logistics) process with “intelligent” material handling systems in order to operate the entire process more efficiently, faster, and at lower costs.
CCE specialists know the market, the suppliers and many of the product groups like conveyor belts, elevator systems, racks (traditional, mobile and automated rack systems), robots, AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles), lift trucks, barcode scanning materials, palletizers, etc.
Most important with the installation of such a material handling system is that all individual components of the system are perfectly geared to one another and produce the calculated output.
- Implementation of WMS software & ICT solutions
Successful warehouse management has always had three major components: space or location, effective equipment and qualified staff. As in many other businesses, another critical dimension has emerged: INFORMATION.
In fact, the adequate use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become central to efficient product flow in the plant or warehouse and for providing the level of (information) services that today’s customers demand like real time inventory, communication and order intake via Internet Technology, traceability of shipments, etc
The Warehouse Management System (WMS) plays a central role. All logistic functions that the staff needs are incorporated in this system. At the same time, it provides information for the financial administration (with regard to invoicing) and management information. Selection, preparation and implementation require expert knowledge.
- Order Picking, Consolidation & Distribution
The services required from logistic service providers are becoming more and more complex. Clients particularly like to outsource the labor-intensive services with seasonal patterns, like order picking and distribution. The short, customary lead times and the temperature-sensitive nature of chilled and frozen products demand a very efficient process.
De division of the space in the picking zones and bulk storage areas, the option “goods-to-man” or “man-to-goods”, the number of picking positions, the lay-out of the picking-floor, the replenishment of empty picking spaces, batch picking or individual customer order picking, manual or semi-automated: these are just some of the questions that need to be answered before a flawless and profitable process can even be considered.
Bringing together (partial) order flows in cross docking is becoming increasingly popular, but places high demands on the organization. The final part of the process, the physical distribution, is a skill in itself and requires specialists in key positions.
- Food Safety Program HAACP/ISO/OHSA
The process of establishing an international Food Safety Management System to replace all the different quality and safety standards is in full swing. Preparations are on the way for ISO-22000, which will cover all standards, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points).
The European General Food Law anticipates these changes and gives clear guidelines with regard to traceability, recall system, responsibility and defining and control of the CCPs.
A reliable food safety policy, based on clear business process descriptions is crucial to all links in the cold chain for perishable food products. The disasters in different parts of the world (mad cow disease, salmonella, bird flu, swine fever, etc) have shown even more the vulnerability of the food and feed chain and the necessity for international standardization and harmonization.
- Executive Search & Management Development
Especially in a labor-intensive service industry, an important part of the added value of a company is determined by its employees. Therefore, key-positions for instance in management, need to be occupied by highly qualified people.
Every now and then, somewhat more expert assistance is desired, for instance when formulating a good job description, tracing qualified candidates, during selection or when drawing up an employment contract.
Senior managers will feel the need for career coaching and will want/have to develop themselves further. A series of 3-6 personal evaluations/meetings in the first year with a personal coach and a carefully set-up personal management development plan are ingredients CCE can assist with.
- Training & Education Programs
Regardless of the employment level of staff within the organization, regular training and education is advised in order for a company to comply with government regulations, to respect the client’s standards, to guarantee security, or to achieve the necessary business goals.
Specialists with practical experience are the best qualified people for all cold chain related aspects like food safety, HACCP management, ammonia safety, risk management, OSHA, fire protection, sanitation, traceability, crisis management, logistics procedures, safe material handling, lift truck driving, etc.
Training for the entire middle management can also take place in-company. The major advantage being that training can be dedicated fully and solely to the own specific, practical situation. For senior management, external training is the best option.
